the CW Network's 2006 TCA Press Tour Party, Neptunesite's Craig
Byrne was fortunate enough to catch up with some actors from Veronica
Mars and get some interview material that hopefully the readers
of this site will enjoy.
One
of the highlights of the party was the opportunity to talk to
Ryan Hansen, who may play Dick on television, but in reality
is anything but. Still a fun guy - basically picture Dick Casablancas
but without any of Dick's bad traits.
In
this brief interview, Ryan talks about taking the jump from occasional
guest spots to series regular, about his TV brother, and about
what may be in store for the future of Dick Casablancas...
What
was it like for you to go from occasional guest star to series
regular?
That
definitely was a sweet, sweet surprise. I originally started out
with a word, in a scene that got gut, and then a couple of guest
stars here in the first season, and then they're like, we want
you for a series regular.
It
was really a dream come true. You always want something like that.
And then for the third season, that was still even a surprise.
It's amazing that they still wanted Dick around. You know, everyone
wants Dick around!
What
will things be like on the show for Dick now that Beaver is gone?
Take
a moment of silence for Beaver.
[Kyle]'s
amazing. He's like a real brother to me. He's so cool.
...
I
feel so weird, because everyone on the cast is so amazing, and
it's honestly such a treat to go to work with these amazing people.
As far as cast and crew, everyone - and I don't know if it's the
San Diego vibe, or what - but it's really, really cool.
Dick
always gets the best lines. Do you ever just bust out laughing
when you read a script?
It's
so cool! When I get the script, I'm like, okay, what's Dick got
to say this time. The writers are just on it. They've definitely
pinpointed what Dick is gonna come up with next.
How
many episodes are you signed for this season?
I
think it's 15, with a possible -- you know, last year I had 15,
I went over, so I could always go over.
What
is Dick up to in Season 3? Is Dick going to college with everyone
else?
Dick
is going to college, and it's cool, because Dick has got some
depth this season, which is cool. I read the first episode. He's
dealing with things. He's still partying and whatever, but he's
definitely got a lot of depth this year, which is cool.
Was
it hard to make Dick a character that people would like after
some of the crap he pulled in Season 1?
Yeah.
I know. It was hard - I think with the writing, and with me trying
to make him a little bit likeable, with that combo, it was hard,
but the writers just did such a good job. You hate to love this
character.
Is
college going to be party central for Dick Casablancas?
Although
he does have depth this season, I think he definitely is still
going to party his nuts off.
