Neptunesite Interviews Jason Dohring (Logan)
Interview conducted by Craig Byrne - NeptuneSite Webmaster
January 3, 2005

Neptunesite is happy and honored to be able to share with you our first-ever exclusive interview with a member of the cast of Veronica Mars. Jason Dohring is a big favorite of fans online for his layered portrayal of "obligatory psychotic jackass" Logan Echolls.

No really large spoilers are within, so those of you who are avoiding spoilers should be safe. Thanks to the folks who made this interview happen, and to Mr. Dohring for taking the time. And here's the interview!

NEPTUNESITE: In your impression, what kind of a guy is Logan Echolls?

JASON DOHRING: First off, I would just like to say thank you for having such a wonderful site for our show. I really appreciate it.

Now, as for the question, I would say he is a rebel. He sort of has a tight group of friends and very firm ideas he sticks to. And when he finds those ideas are wrong (e.g.. betrayal by friends he thought he was tight to, etc.) it destroys him. He becomes harder. I do think he is a bright guy but just looks at everything from a hostile point of view.

NS: Are you anything like the character you play on television?

JASON: Hope not.

I may have his seriousness, but not his evilness.

NS: Had you worked with or were you a fan of any of the Veronica Mars cast members or crew (i.e., Joel Silver, Rob Thomas) before signing on to do the show?

JASON: No. I hadn't known anyone prior to working with them on the show. Kristen, however, did read with me for my last couple auditions before I was cast.

NS: You have several siblings who also have done some acting. Who started first, and how did you all get involved?

JASON: Funny story. My mother worked in the same building as an agency (MGA), and they heard about the "two sets of identical twins" (Jon and Robert and Kirsten and Kelsey) in our family and set up a meeting with all of us. Identical twins are used quite a bit in the industry when they are young to play the role of one person. The reason for this being is that when you have very young kids, they can't be worked more than three hours a day. So with twins, they can work one for three hours and the other one for three hours and not many people would be able to tell the difference. So, we all signed with them commercially and not long after, my sisters got the role of the youngest daughter Chrissy on Growing Pains for a season. We all did commercials growing up.

NS: What was the audition process like for Veronica Mars?

JASON: Another funny story! I originally auditioned for the role of "Duncan." And I think my audition was a little dark so they had me read for "Logan" who was originally only going to be a guest star role for the pilot. The funny thing is Teddy Dunn (Duncan) originally auditioned for "Logan." I guess I am just a bigger ass! :)

NS: At what point did you all learn that the pilot you had done was becoming a series?

JASON: About two or three months after shooting the pilot. In May 2004.

NS: Do you read any of the online fan feedback about the show?

JASON: Embarrassingly, yes! I think we all looked to see what people thought about us, especially at the start. We would all sit around and talk about Francis as the "Hunk" with "beautiful eyelashes," etc. Good times.

NS: If yes, what have you read that you found to be the most amusing?

JASON: I am constantly amazed that the audience catches the smallest little moments that go on between the characters. One person even saw me looking through Duncan's homework answers when he wasn't looking. I can't believe somebody caught that. Such a little thing, you know?

NS: Logan seems to flirt with anyone and everyone he interacts with. Was this written as a direction, or something that you added to your portrayal?

JASON: Mmmm... just the character, I guess. He likes to have fun, even though honestly, I don't know if he is. Does that make sense?

NS: And on that note, do you think Logan might have a soft spot for Veronica?

JASON: I think there was always a respect that he had for her. It's hard not to like K.B. and all that she brings to the role.

NS: What is the atmosphere like on the Veronica Mars set?

JASON: Rad! Best cast I've ever worked with. And as for the crew, being with them week after week, many have become friends and we play poker and pool and ping-pong together when we have off time.

NS: Is there anything coming up for Logan that you're allowed to talk about without spoiling things?

JASON: His sister comes back. GOOD STUFF on the way!

NS: Has anything about your character surprised you as the show has evolved?

JASON: I guess I am happy to be able to play many aspects of one guy. Just a great range that the writers have written for this character.

NS: Do you think you have figured out which character killed Lilly Kane?

JASON: Yeah, I think so. Mmm... very interesting!

NS: If the killer is Logan, what do you think that would mean for your character's future?

JASON: The O.C. (Just kidding).

NS: Do you have any other projects coming up that fans may be interested in seeing?

JASON: I have a lot of heavier stuff that I did earlier this year. I did a kind of weird episode of Judging Amy and a rad Cold Case. I also did a double guest star season finale of "The Division" where I play a very evil guy. If you can track those down, I think they may be of interest. Also, you can check out a movie that I am pretty proud of called "Black Cadillac" (in which I play a nerd very far away from "Logan")

NS: Why should someone watch Veronica Mars if they aren't already?

JASON: Well, if I may be so bold, I think it is one of the best young casts on TV. The writing is so creative, so original, so edgy, funny and sad. And if you got good (being bold again) actors acting it, and good crew guys crewing it, you got it all.
