At
Monday night's Paley event, we were fortunate enough to catch
up with several of the Veronica Mars cast members. The
first person in the line that we were able to talk to was Duncan
Kane himself, Teddy Dunn. Be warned of potential spoilers.
NEPTUNESITE:
What can you say about what's coming up on the show, without spoilers?
TEDDY
DUNN: I'm really looking forward to it. You see how I am right
here. Obviously I'm not the usual clean-shaven Duncan, so he doesn't
have time to shave.
NS:
Duncan seems to be embarking on a relationship with Meg. Can you
say anything about that?
TD:
I don't think I can really keep a relationship. I don't think
Duncan's stable enough at this point in time.
NS:
Does he still have feelings for Veronica?
TD:
Of course. He's in love with her. He's had a real tough time,
and there's nothing he can do about it. Of course that whole brother-sister
thing makes things a little bit complicated.
[At
this point I asked him to clarify, because for a second it seemed
like he was giving away a future plotline. He meant what he said
based on the material that's already aired. Though, he did reveal
"You'll come to figure out why I did break up with her so
abruptly, and I have my reasons."]
NS:
What is it like to work with such great actors as Kyle Secor
and Lisa Thornhill as your parents?
TD:
Kyle Secor, growing up, the funny thing about him was, Homicide
was my favorite show growing up, and he was my favorite character
on the show, as the one I related closest to. And when I found
out he was playing my father on my first, real professional job,
I'm working with an idol of mine. It was unbelievable. And the
first day on the set, I met him. I said, 'you were my favorite
on Homicide,' and I just was grilling him about that, and he was
so cool about it, so gracious about it, with his wisdom and his
knowledge. Lisa as well. They're just so gracious, and generous,
what they have. Rico, too.
NS:
What do you think of the large online following that Veronica
Mars has?
TD:
What can't you say? It's huge.
NS:
You know the Shane West thing was a joke, right? [An early
fan posting on TelevisionWithoutPity.com referred to Duncan Kane
as a "poor man's Shane West." They were of course joking,
but at some point it made it out to the press that Teddy Dunn
saw this.]
TD:
[laughs] You heard about that? I figured that out a little
later. You know, that's what they were sayin' after the first
episode, and so I didn't know what to think. This is a first experience
for me, too, so I haven't gotten used to any of this yet, so that
of course, I was like 'what?' and then I figured out that's just
the way they are, and it's just how it goes. The following's incredible.
I think the online support really is part of, if not mostly the
reason why we're still on the air, and why people are so behind
the show with the network and the studio, so I think they've been
great.
NS:
What would your idea be for a dream feature on a Veronica Mars
DVD?
TD:
There better be one. Joel Silver, you know, it'll sell. I think
the dream feature needs to be outtakes. We have some really good,
really funny outtakes. Especially on the really dramatic scenes,
outtakes from the scenes where you just can't get it out.
